With so many fundraising events in the market, you’ll be hard pressed to make something that’s never been done before.

But with a little bit of creativity, and the support from your charity beneficiaries, donors, and fundraisers, you can create a successful fundraising campaign unique to your cause

What type of fundraising ideas are there?

Activity campaigns

Activity campaigns are great for promoting good health. Starting a new healthy routine with an activity campaign is a great way to show fundraisers that they can create positive changes for themselves, at the same time as making a positive impact for an important cause.

Activity campaigns can either be virtual fundraising events, or they can be in-person events.

The Cumbrian Challenge is an epic weekend in-person walking challenge across three difficulty levels in the Lake District to raise much-needed funds to support Veterans, and their families.

Ideas for an activity peer-to-peer fundraising campaign:

  • Run
  • Walk
  • Hike/Trek
  • Cycle
  • Swim
  • Dance
  • Climb

Abstinence campaigns

Abstinence campaigns are about giving something up for a good cause. These can also kickstart some health lifestyle habits. The challenge is to give up something they’d usually consume, for a set period of time, whether it’s a week or a month, or even longer. Keeping away from temping things like donuts or coffee, garners the support from their friends and family as they donate to help motivate them to keep up with their new habit, as well as raise funds for your non-profit.

Dry July is a great example of an abstinence campaign, and it just so happens to be the campaign our Managing Director, Brett Macdonald co-founded, which gave us the learnings to create Ezy Raise.

Ideas for an abstinence peer-to-peer fundraising campaign:

  • Give up alcohol
  • Give up sugar
  • Give up caffeine

Changing how you look campaigns

Changing how you look for a day or a few days can really make an impact. Dress in colours to match an important cause, wear a specific outfit, or alter your appearance for a day, a week,  a month (or even a year🎵).

Aus Music T-Shirt Day is a fundraising campaign designed to bring together the entertainment community to support music workers in crisis.

Ideas for changing your appearance campaigns:

  • Grow your hair, beard, or moustache
  • Cut your hair, beard, or moustache
  • Wear a fun outfit for the day - like the Onesie Appeal
  • Dye your hair a specific colour
  • Wear loud makeup
  • Wear no makeup

School fundraising events

Getting kids involved with charity events is a great way to show them the difference they can make in people’s lives. When a school gets involved with charity fundraising, it gives them the opportunity to bring together the entire school with a common goal. There’s peer support, and motivation throughout the full campaign as all the staff and children get involved with fundraising for an important cause.

An event like Loud Shirt Day is perfect for schools to get involved in! Everyone wears a LOUD shirt for the day to raise money for babies and kids who are deaf or have hearing loss. You can even encourage everyone to have LOUD hair for the day to match their shirt.

Ideas for fundraising events at school:

  • Morning tea
  • Fair day
  • Non-uniform day
  • Dunk-your-teacher day

What to consider when planning in-person fundraising events

So you’ve decided it’s time for an in person charity event. If you’re wanting to run an event in person, it’s not always as simple as the decision to get out there and make it happen. There’s insurance, road closures, traffic considerations, fundraiser registration, registration caps, and considering the general safety of your event participants and their supporters.

Even if you decide to run a small street-party for example, it’s still important to check with your local council about any rules and regulations you may need to adhere to, and any licenses or permissions you need to gather before event day.
